Milestones: Henry's first haircut
Well the big news around here is that we gave Henry his first haircut. We dressed him up for church on Sunday and he looked so cute, but when I was watching him toddle around the aisles of the chapel, I realized - my baby has a serious mullet. I woke up Monday, resolved to fix the problem, i.e. cut off his blessed sweet curls!! Don't worry I saved some curls, it's one of those gross mom things I never thought I'd do, but alas. He was a superstar during the haircut. I just sat him on my lap while we watched Cars and Mark buzzed and snipped away.
Doesn't he look dashing!? Bonus - this haircut really makes it easier to tell that yes, he is a boy, strangers in the grocery store and in the park.

red hair.
just yesterday i was sitting in my meeting, and my mind drifted off to a place it often does: my hair. i had a thought that i should dye it red. and then today i came across this picture:
how striking! long beautiful red hair with a lovely ribbon tied on! give me 2 years and my hair will be that long and beautiful (though not likely that lovely auburn).

chia pet.
if only i were a chia pet, with hair that could grow back in a matter of weeks.
today i hate my hair.
tomorrow i will probably love it again.
it's amazing how back and forth i go in a matter of hours. extreme hatred and near tears to swinging my hips a little more cause i love it.
my coworker came in my office today asking why i cut it off and told me i looked like a boy. what a jerk. did she ever think that maybe androgyny was what i was going for? or maybe that its nice to not have to worry about being in the olden days where women had to have long hair? or was my hair my one beauty (points to someone who can name that quote)?

chop goes the scissors. gnomie goes pixie.
let's revisit the metamorphosis of gnomies hair in 2010.

i feel brave. i feel so nice. having short hair makes ponytails look funny on other people. "why don't they just cut it off?", i think to myself. i still have some learning to do on styling, but for now i'm just loving the feel of the breeze blowing on my bare neck and the small dime sized shampoo i use. hello new summer haircut.May 25, 2010
short hair.

michelle williams, the beautiful and legendary jean seberg, and audrey tautou.beautiful women who would look drop-dead gorgeous in any hairstyle.
could i pull off any of them?? short summer hair is on my wish list right now. just don't know if i have the guts to do this! though, in my defense, i did have the guts to walk into a salon in london and say chop it off, up to my ears, please, all 12 inches. so that has to give me some sort of leg up, no?

bowtie and a haircut.

i feel so fancy today in my sparkly sequin bowtie. got this shirt at the laden showroom in the shoreditch neighborhood of london. great boutique store full of independent designer clothes!
and also, yes, i got a haircut. it's a little messy today, but you get the idea. i LOVE having short hair! easier to wash, style-able, and it's just long enough that i can pull it back in a little pony. it will be the perfect summer cut!

If you see me with scissors, run away.
Once upon a time I used to be the queen of haircuts. I gave haircuts to my roommates, my sisters, my friends - whoever requested. And it always looked good. I astutely observed the techniques of my own hair stylist and mimicked her like a parrot gone bad. Everyone I gave a haircut to had pretty much the same style. But! It was a good style.
Until...my roommate asked me to give her the Meg Ryan. You remember. Chin length, shaggy bob, very cute. The cut would've looked great on her, but...I didn't think I could do it. "Sure you can", insisted Caroline. How hard can it be? Having heard horror stories of short haircuts, I apparently let my pride overtake me, because the next thing I knew I was chopping her beautiful hair into what can only be described as a mushroom. We both cried. I helped her put a bag over her head and go fix it into her only option---old lady haircut. The only upside of that story? Short hair grows back fast.
Three years later, still shaken up from the titanic of haircuts, my sister asked me to give her a trim. Sure. How hard can a trim be? Ten minutes later, she looked like a 4th grad version of myself. She hated it. I hated it. We both retreated into self-loathing for awhile.
Thus, again, the haircuts stopped.
Until a year ago. TH needed a haircut. I'd never done boys hair before. How hard could it be? (Do you see a pattern forming here?) My cutting tool was to be a beard trimmer and I figured things would go swimmingly. WRONG. Ten minutes later and after repeated "oops" and "umm" (I'm surprised he let me continue) his hair looked like a cheetah or a leper. Spotty, shagged in the wrong places, long on bottom. Baaaad. He had to go to the barber and basically get it shaved.
I'm not great at haircuts.
So imagine my surprise when last week, TH asked me AGAIN to try giving him a haircut. We had proper tools this time and I assumed I'd learned my lesson of not using bad haircuts, and not taking style risks. I was sweating. I'm sure TH was too. Slowly, and methodically, on #2, I buzzed the hair.
I went over it again and again to make sure I'd gotten all the longer pieces. Trimmed the back making the straightest line I could. Thought about getting a ruler, but trusted my poor judgement instead.
And what do you know - it turned out ok! Can you tell? All hairs were even!

For now I'll stick with what I know - TH's short hair. But maybe in the future I"ll branch out Maybe even try another Meg Ryan! ...Who wants to be my guinea pig?

Oh and if anyone is keeping track, the project is over
In my state of sadness, I needed to do something to make myself feel better. So it was snip, snip, snip for my bangs. I'm glad I did it. I like my bangs. Why was I growing them out again?

The bangs - Week 2
Slowly, slowly but surely...

I'm getting antsy to cut off some of this hair, though. I fight it by remembering how cute long hair looks underneath a winter hat. Stay strong, gnomie.

Now recommending...
I'm going to share a secret with you, dear readers. If you are Iggy, Teen Heartthrob or Red Head sister, you already know this. But for everyone else, let me introduce you to the world of The Best Hair You've Ever Had:

REDKEN - ALLSOFT
I bought this haircare line a few months ago, despite the warning from a certain girl we'll call Heddo. I'm pretty sure it was either her or her doble who told me to never ever buy Redken because it will screw your hair up and make it sticky and disgusting. Well, I took a chance, Heddo. And I'm supposing we have different hair types, because it did the opposite to my hair. It made it all smooth and manageable and softer than the gold threads that Rumpelstilsken himself spun.
If you want amazing, shiny, flowing locks - do yourself a favor and invest in some Redken. RedHead sister - I assume you are using it since I recently left it in your shower. I really hope you are, I would hate to see it wasted. That's like burning money or pouring liquid acid on a diamond.

So big deal. What if I DO want this haircut?

It's kind of a mullet, kind of a bob. Confusing as it may sound, it looks so adorable. I love the look of a fresh haircut!
