Obsessed

Every day, several times throughout the day, I look at the weather app on my phone. I'm obsessed. I always have London and Washington DC and always compare the two. When we're having our millionth day of Spring here (seriously, how many days of 55 F can one person take before protesting in a Tshirt?), DC has been heating up to the 80's and even 90's! If I were back there, I could be beaching it up and living in summer dresses already! Instead, I'm protesting by staying inside most days, huge sweater wrapped around me, thick socks, and thinking of soups for dinner.

Every couple of weeks I put different cities on my weather app to get an idea of where I should be traveling for better weather. So far, it's too cold for the green waters of Cornwall (maybe July), still cold in the Lake District (though, we're going in a couple of weeks anyway for some R&R), Corfu is pretty perfect, Seville is getting there, and it's WAY too hot to travel to Marrakech right now - 100 F every day.

I can't be the only one who does this, right? The perpetual dreamer of going other places with perfect weather? Is it a British thing?

They're calling for a heat wave this weekend. It is supposed to be up to 70 F. Seriously. HEAT WAVE.

4:00

It is completely dark here by 4:00 every day.
Somehow this makes those wiggly 5-7pm hours so much harder to do.
Mark gets home sometime between 7:30 - 8:30, and sometimes, I'll be honest - I just turn on a movie when Henry wakes up because WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO DO.

We are going back to DC for Christmas and even though it's only been 3 months since we left, somehow this seems like the most welcome treat of my life. Family, good friends, and great food - what else is there?

I love London, and really this winter has been pretty mild so far - no snow, not a lot of rain, and we even see the sun most days. But. The meteorologists are calling for the worst winter in modern times starting at Christmas time (what do they know, right? RIGHT?) and I'm afraid that coming back to London after the holiday will be extremely hard on our sense of well being. Cold, snowy, darkness until Spring? I doth protest.

The silver lining is that when we come back, the sun will have started to set a little later every day. Maybe it will even be light until 4:15! Just think of the possibilities.

Rain rain, make me a millionare

You know what would be a brilliant marketing scheme for an umbrella company? Or even just an idea for a business - Umbrellas to your Doorstep.

I don't have an umbrella and it's pouring rain right now. I would pay a pretty penny for an umbrella to be delivered to my office. Seriously, does anyone want to start this business? It would clearly be great in a place where it doesn't rain too often and people aren't prepared for rain. Or a city full of Nomadic Gnomes who are too cheap to buy umbrellas and only realize the importance of them when they have to ruin their beautiful shiny hair in an unending thunderstorm.

The Reds and Whites

Happy birthday to my brother, Roberto Rigoletto!! (yesterday)

I have been out of the loop for the past few days. The boss came back to the office and its been a whirlwind of work and kissin ass. Something that I've become better at over the past few years (but still have no real vested interest in).

It's been raining here the past few days. A cold front has moved in and its so refreshing and delightful! This is what autumn, October days are supposed to be about! So last night, after a tough day of work I went home to relax...and I spotted it.

From across the room I saw the 2 video VHS made in 1960-something classic. I'd been waiting for a dark, and cold dreary day to watch this movie. Dr. Zhivago. I'd seen another version before, but it was starring Keira Knightly. I mean she was just suPERB in pirates and pride and prejudice(read: nearly unwatchable) but I had a hard time taking her in that movie. Although, I love her in Love Actually. Maybe because she has a smaller part?

Anyway, Dr. Zhivago. I loved it. Winner of 5 academy awards. It's so loooong and telling and full of war and freezing, starving Russians. Not to say that I like watching people suffer, but there is something about the dismal "every song is in a minor key" land of Russia. I love epic type movies that follow people throughout their years of development. The beginning is full of so much hope, but also so many foreboding and dreadful events that you can figure out This is Going to Get a Little Complicated.

All the characters are so unrealistically beautiful, especially for people who are supposedly starving and freezing to death in the harsh winters during the civil war of the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.

Maybe it goes back to my History major in college, but I love historic wartime. It's so interesting to watch the desperation and suffering that these wars support and cause. I always tend to wonder what makes a person rationalize killing people, especially innocent children and their parents. The brainwashing of soldiers has to come at some point, I just wonder when that happens.

Anyway 3 1/2 hours later, I have to recommend you all watch this movie. The old one, not the new version with Keira Skin-n-Bones Knightly. It will make you believe in the power of survival.

To everything there is a season

As I was running through my neighborhood last night, I couldn't help but think: I cannot wait for autumn! Now the funny thing is (and I'm sure you could discover this by reading my blog history), toward the end of every season I am always dying for the next one to arrive.

Spring: I'm so sick of all the rain and summer teasers. Let it be hot already! Vacation!
Summer: It's so bloody hot, I swear I could melt on this very sidewalk. Give me some cool autumn breeze.
Autumn: Enough of all these nasty leaves all over the ground and the rain. I want some holiday snow!
Winter: Holidays are over, February is the worst, if somebody doesn't warm things up around here I am moving to India.

As I was musing over the fact that I wish I could just go to the places of the world where the weather is always pleasant (what am I - like 80 years old?), I realized that we have seasons for a very good reason. I'm sure most people really desire change in their lives. Most people choose a place to live and permanently settle in this area. They move into a home, send their children to a good school, and get comfortable in their lifestyle. If the weather was always 75 and sunny with a light breeze, you would want to go somewhere else to experience a little climate change, right? I think that is why seasons are so brilliant. You are able to feel like you live somewhere different in a snow covered world compared to the swealtering summer heat.

Plus, seasons help create a feeling of nostalgia. When it is cold, I always want to cuddle up inside with hot chocolate and watch old Cary Grant movies. When it is hot, I want to be lazy or play in the lake and eat slurpees. There is always a drink involved in my nostalgic memories. I guess autumn is tea or chai and spring would have to be juice. There you have it.

But seriously, South America for the winters and Alaska for the summers! Who's with me?
